A radio propagation modeling tool uses one or more models to predict signal level at a given location. This path loss modeling is the basis for network design and optimization, and, as reliance on such tools increases, their accuracy becomes more important. With your organization’s planning and budget decisions based on the output of these tools, the errors caused by the difference between prediction and measurement can have profound consequences.

At Newfield Wireless, we have a deep understanding of the many factors that influence the accuracy of radio propagation models. By applying our knowledge, experience, and customized applications, we can efficiently and accurately calibrate your propagation models.

Process:

Develop Project Requirements

Identification of priority areas, with special attention paid to areas in which existing models do not correlate with drive test data. Detailed examination of process inputs, scrutiny of clutter and terrain variation, and determination of location-specific effects. Finally, we determine the most suitable strategy to model the market’s morphologies.

Creation of Guidelines and Standards

In a collaborative process, the Newfield team customizes and integrates its guidelines and standards specifically for the client’s organization.

Selection of a Suitable Model

Newfield works with clients to choose the most suitable model for their application. Newfield has also developed custom models for clients (see Propagation Modeling).

Data Analysis

Using custom-developed applications and hard-won expertise, the Newfield team analyzes the collected path loss data. This analysis identifies trends and possible errors. A rigorous quality assurance system is established in conjunction with the client’s personnel to ensure data quality throughout the process.

Development of Data Collection Methods

After a thorough review of market-specific factors, optimum data collection methods are established. Newfield coordinates data collection with the various functional groups. Newfield performs on-site verification of database information to ensure the best possible inputs to the calibration process.

Model Calibration

The propagation model undergoes a process of tuning and retuning until the model is calibrated to the client’s specifications.

Model Validation

Independent data sets are used to validate the model’s accuracy. The calibrated models are tested and evaluated on the client’s network and undergo a rigorous acceptance process.
